Land Acknowledgement

“We acknowledge that Wetaskiwin is located on Treaty 6 territory, the traditional meeting grounds and traveling route of the nêhiyawak (Cree), Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, Dene, and Nakota Sioux. We honor the history and culture of the Indigenous peoples who have lived on and cared for this land for generations. The name ‘Wetaskiwin’ comes from the Cree word wītaskīwin-ispatinow, meaning ‘the hills where peace was made.’ We recognize the enduring presence of Indigenous peoples on this land and commit to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation, friendship, and partnership.”
